Today’s guest is Karl Darlow, goalkeeper for Newcastle United. With Karl today we discuss his journey as a goalkeeper, first through the academy set up at Aston Villa, then getting released at 16 & signing for Nottingham Forest, where he had loan spells at Newport County & Walsall, before becoming their number 1 & making over 100 appearances for the club. We talk about first signing for Newcastle United, his expectations, ambitions at the club & dealing with being a number 2 for a long period of time & how he personally deals with it. We finally touch on dealing with mistakes, criticism from social media & how Karl mentally blocks it all out so he can move on & move forward to the next game. It was a really interesting chat & you get a real insight into the mindset of Karl & how everything he has been through has built up such a mental toughness & strength to deal with the pressures of being a Premier League Goalkeeper.

Kris Thackray was released by Newcastle United at the age of 16, but went onto have a great career out in Italy, Germany & Malta for the likes of Reggina in Seria A, before return to the North East where he is currently playing for Blyth Spartans.
With Kris today we discuss the mental health side of football, especially at a young age, where the pressure of academy football & fighting for your dream can have a massive impact on you without you realising.
Kris shares his experiences while abroad, the different mentalities of coach’s, players & fans, including some crazy stories of fans taking over the club, raiding his shopping basket & forcing the players to lay their shirts on the pitch after a derby loss.
Finally, Kris opens up about a really tough period of his life where he had to deal with the tragic loss of his brother, the breakdown of his marriage, a serious knee injury & looking after his two young daughters, which then forced him to end his professional footballing career early.
We appreciate Kris opening up about his story & we hope this podcast may help others out their who are struggling to come forward & open up themselves in their time of suffering.

Carl is a physiotherapist under the name F.I.T. Physio, based in Gosforth, Newcastle. During his younger days, Carl played football for Newcastle United & represented England at youth level as a goalkeeper, however, a number of serious injuries meant that he was forced to retire at a very young age.
We discuss how the seriousness, pressures & also injuries that come with the game lead Carl to lose the love for the game & how that effected him mental. Carl gives some great advice for any young athlete going through a period of injury, loss of confidence or loss of enjoyment & what he did after his football career.
We finally touch on the importance of Strength & Conditioning for young athletes & some of the work he does at F.I.T. Gosforth.

With Jack we discuss where his crazy 4:00am starts, disciplined routine & obsession with the gym came from & how he maintains it daily. We also discuss how he copes with numerous serious injuries, how they first came about & how he adapts his training to deal with them as well as a bit of bodybuilding specific talk, especially on whether you should train isolations before compounds.
